David and Arne, your last post about an inclusive web book raised an issue: it might be a good idea to have a writeup template, stylesheet or guidelines available for contributors to the all-inclusive web book material.  This template would have consistent font selections and sizes for header, subheader, margins, illustration size and dpi, possibly even writing style.  Right now it's all over the place.

Another problem I'm encountering here is that most material is formatted A4 while all printers in the region are set up for the close-but-not-quite "letter" page size.  I think it's possible to choose margins that allow for the material to be printed on either with some misplacement but no loss of content.
    Good points, Karlis.
I've been doing some work on developing a standard style for the pages of the PJR supplement, based on the style I used for the recent AGM and rally report, but I'd forgotten the point about letter-size paper being wider, but shorter, than A4.
(So everything I've done up to now - magazines, etc - wouldn't print on letter-size paper?)
What I'll do is to email you a draft of a single page item, and also a template for a .doc single page, for your comments on how they print, and on the style.

What? As far as I know, if we convert each page to PDF  format, these are crimped a little so that a page written in  (the wider and lower) US format can be printed on an A4 format printer and vice versa. Have I been dreaming this up all the time? Correct me someone

    Ernie,
Thanks for the link to show us Erica's fine illustration work. It's probable that most of the drawings that will be needed will be of the technical kind, done in 2D CAD, but there will also be some 3D illustrations needed. It's very early days yet, we're really only just getting started, so we'll just make a note of this possibility for now. Anyway, thanks again for coming forward.

    Arne,
The answer to your question is:
    "Both".
    Kind of.

What we seem to be settling down with as our plan for the moment is:
    1. A real book (printed, pdf, Kindle, EPUB or whatever), written principally by Gerry O'Brien, with the tentative working title of "Western Junk Rig  - the first 50 years", or "The JRA - the first 30 years", or something like that. Gerry will read himself into all the material he, and we, can find; he will digest it, and write the book that he thinks should be written, composed of history, description, evaluation, comparison, discussion and so on, of all that has happened - but apart from quoting where appropriate, the source material will not be used verbatim. This should end up as a professionally produced book.
    2. All the source material that we have found and gathered together will be made available, item by item, article by article, as desired by a reader, as a pdf and possibly as professionally printed pages; they will be intended to be hole punched and stored in a ring binder (we might produce a nice ring binder for sale, but we come up against the difficulty of differing ISO and American standards for the hole spacing). That means that there is no very great need to change any of your published work, except where necessary to allow hole-punching. All that needs to be done initially is to gather everything into one place, rather than to have it scattered about as it is now, and with a good indexing and searching arrangement so that you can find what you are looking for. So this is your web-based book. There is no limit on how much can go into it. As time permits, I would like all the (currently) very differently presented articles to be submitted to some graphic design, and to be presented in a common style. This will be most necessary on the older, type-written material, where we will have to use OCR and then to bring it up to an acceptable production standard to be included. This will also be necessary on more recent material, such as might be extracted from the Technical Forum or from Ask the Junkmaster, which is not yet in a stand-alone form.
So that's the plan. But it will change, according to who amongst us is going to take the work forward, and what skills they can bring to the work.

                                                                       Stavanger, Wednesday

                        PJR 2.0, in what format?

I am one of those who have been asked to contribute to the PJR 2.0. Well and fine, but there are a few questions regarding the format of the finished product.

Until now, my writing has been meant for easy reading on any sort of pc and for good resolution on anyone’s laser- or ink-jet printer. This means that a given length of text need more space than in a yachting magazine where high-quality printing and professional editing let one use smaller letters and 2-3 columns. Also, with their hi-quality printing and graphics, the photos and diagrams may be crimped and still be sharp/clear.

The problem is that if PJR 2.0 is to be a web book and with (some) pages printed out on a home printer, the result will not be good unless we are generous with the number of pages. With this setup it will also be better to use just one column, giving about 85characters/line.

On the other hand, if PJR 2.0 is to be a printed book, then there will be a strong need for editing to compress more info into the given number of pages.

So what is the plan for PJR 2.0’s layout?

Simple amateur web- and printer-friendly layout with plenty of pages

    or..

a printed book which calls for professional editing and professional graphics.

Personally I would go for the first option as I hate to be edited and because it would be cheaper. Even 500pages wouldn’t be that expensive to print on a laser printer, compared to byying a 300page book.

    Hi Ernie

Thanks for those thoughts and for 'volunteering' Erica. Those links work fine - you certainly have a talented lady there. I'll email the team who have similarly 'volunteered' to work on the update so we can be sure they've seen your post. Many thanks.

I think this would be splendid idea as long as a paper copy could be made that would print clear.
Erica and I did a great deal of research to get our rig up and sailing. most of it was a few books and several hundred snippets in very old manuscripts and pictures.

Now i am not volunteering Erica but she is a very handy artist when it comes to line drawings. she has a very clear hand and has the drafting experience to do a very nice job on layout and form. she is also a writer and writes for clarity in her work. Folk's might want to think it over and i can ask her if she would like to do this.

(if you want to see her work we have plans for sail on our website that she has drawn the thumbnails for. Please ignore the web site content since this is not a sales pitch.)

I will try to link directly to one of the images so folks dont have to wade through I just include this so people can find the drawings if i cannot link a picture. RMH-Cabin8-1pgWeb.png

well that's all i know how to do so just click and look.
