Flat Sails are Still Okay

    I forgot to add:
If a few Kindle copies of the PJR were hacked and distributed, should we be too concerned? If some hotel guests steal their Bibles, would the Gideons be alarmed? Would they have been purchased anyway? We're not publishing a Harry Potter novel destined to be sold at pirate-book kiosks in Moscow.

The eBook is in it's infancy. Who knows what methods will evolve to make it easier to transcribe old books to digital format. Let's keep the options open. If PGR goes permanently out of print it will fade into history which would be unfortunate. It should be preserved in some format.
A good topic for the AGM.

Amazon's Kindle copy protection is very easily removed... (Oops, I shouldn't have said that.) I agree with Gary that the printed version would mostly only be bought by those already enough 'in the know' to want to build or upgrade a junk. I still think e-booking it would be a nightmare, because of the diagrams. A pdf version would be easier but almost by definition, free. It would take a pro to do it. For discussion at the AGM?

eBooks through Amazon are all copy protected, I was referring to the pdf option. But, I don't consider PJR as a book for junk rig advocacy, its for people who have already decided to build a JR.

I think that the JRA should do some research into the details of an ebook alternative. Copy protection is available. I think profits could be higher with an ebook. The hardcover is never going to be a big seller and the profit margin is very low anyway for printed hardcover books. It's not about profit anyway. The JRA wants to spread the word, share the technology. We should be happy to break even. It's just another way to spread the word.

If the JRA did acquire publishing rights, it might consider a soft cover, spiral bound version published by an on-demand book printer. They lie flat when open.
Then there could be a digital version. Cheap to produce. Carry on your iPad etc. It would be easy to attach supplements and update them.

I agree with the above buying rights proposal, or at least proposing to Jay Benford to add another appendix re cambered sails. The spiral bound format is a good idea too, the book is already at reference book price (which is fair), may as well make it the best it can be. But you wouldn't want the ebook, inferior as it would be, to cannibalise hard copy sales and a pdf file means easily copied & pirated.

Yes, iPad and smaller present difficulties. Full screen computer is better, though not as easy to use as a book. I see the value of digital in that it could extend the market range for junk rig technology, at a reasonable price. In the digital supplements, high definition photographs would surpass the quality of printed photos.

I like the spiral idea, Jim. Not so sure the book would be very useful in digital form. Would probably work OK as a pdf for iPads, but getting all those diagrams into a digital form for Kindles and e-book readers that us the e-pub file format would need a pro. It's not as straightforward as it sounds. Perhaps someone on the Committee can bring this possibility  up at the next AGM.
