    why are you talking about 9 – 10m tall mast? As the two sailplans show, the mast height above wl. is 8.82 and 9.22m. Now I checked the LAP (length above partners) of both rig versions and came to 8.0 and 8,4m. The recommended bury is around 10% of the LAP, not 10% of the total length, so 80 and 84cm bury will do fine. On such a flat, strong deck, I would not have bailed out even if there had only been room for a bury of 8% of the LAP.

    Arne has very kindly drawn two sailplans for my Galion. They have quite a generous sail area with aspect ratios of 2.05 and 2.15.

    Now that I have inspected the hull plan more closely, it hit me: It's very difficult if not impossible to have enough bury for a 9-10 meter mast if  it is to be installed through the foredeck. The bottom shape of the hull rises very steeply at the front.

    This is bad news, as the straight foredeck would be perfect for other reasons (interior space, sail balance, saving the practical forehatch).

    I think it's possible to build more thickness to the mast area, up to the lower end of the forehatch, hut I don't know it would be enough.

    Any ideas, please?

    The other potential places for the mast would be through the forehatch (not optimal plus quite difficult because of the curvy shape) or right in the front of the cabin bulkhead/BR mast (too far back).

    I believe that the outermost layer is of epoxy/glass, but he is well aware of the issue.

    True. The fully hardened character of T6 means that it is no longer ductile enough to roll a taper.

    If I have understood this T4, T5 and T6 stuff, this is about tempering the alloy over some time and then lowering the temp over some time. Could it be  that the tapered poles are rolled to shape first , and only tempered to T6 standard afterwards?
