    I notice that the CLR and CE have been mentioned. One must remember that these are only geometrical centres.

    The acronym for the actual Centre of Pressure of a wing, sail or keel, is CP. More often than not, the CP sits well forward of the CE in a sail, somewhere roughly around 30% aft of the luff.

    Unlike the geometrical centres, CE and CLR, the CP will move around quite a bit. For instance the CP moves forward in a sail at low angle of attack/incidence (α) and moves aft as the α increases.

     

    I also mean to remember that Round has be up, but I didn’t see the opposite word, Hollow.

    Hollow is a concave curve; in junk sails Hollow is sometimes cut into the leech of the upper (fanned ) panels to prevent fluttering and a hooked leech.

     

    (.. maybe there is less need for cutting hollow in the leech of a batten panel with camber in it. When I made a new sail for Frøken Sørensen, this summer, I forgot to cut any hollow in panel 1 and 2, but the leech still stays nice and taut. Maybe hollow is only needed in flat sails…)

    Hi Arne,

    There is a draft, but at this point it's getting holes filled and painfully rough edges ground off of it. I'm hoping to put it out for feedback shortly after New Years, but haven't cleared that with the team that's involved.

    At this point, any suggestions are welcome, and we're adding terms as they come in (CP, for example, was a new one).

    The general format is as follows:

    Term: Succinct definition. Particulars. Special considerations. Relevance to Junk Rig. [Source] See Related Entries.
    Not every term has all that, and they don't all fit into that format, but we're working toward it. If you care to write up suggestions in that form, it definitely helps us along.

    Dave, thanks for your continuing efforts.

    Arne, the document that Bruce Weller produced is on the site. If you look at it regard it as a pre-Dave work in progress. Dave and Lesley are looking at using a Wiki format for the update, and would be happy for you to join in :-) Anyway, look in Members Area > Junk FAQs > Vocabulary for the original link.

    As brian said! the original document is on this site? What dave and the team are doing is honing that document and presenting it in a Wiki format as a glossary. Once that is completed to Dave's satisfaction, we hope it will be reviewed by a wider team and then a link will be made available.

    For those not familiar with the concept, a wiki differs from a static web page or document in that it can be edited and added to on an ongoing basis, by whoever has the knowledge and inclination. There are a few basic techniques to learn, but the wiki is quite easy to get up to speed with.

    The idea is that once the definition of each 'term' is 'agreed' each can then be given its own page where it can be expanded and illustrated as those who have the time and interest, can do so.

    Everyone can help here, and one simple way would be to have a look at the existing Junk vocabulary and then take a look at your own photographs. Do you have a photograph that would help illustrate any one of those terms? If you can't find any, why not take your camera with you next time you're on the boat and take some photographs? A picture tells a thousand words, after all and you can help make a difference.

Bruce Weller's original document has been moved into 'wiki' format and is now with the rest of the team (Bruce himself, Lesley Verbrugge, Arne Kverneland, Shemaya Laurel) for topping and tailing. Others are welcome to Join In with this final task either now or later - the more involvement, the better the result will be. Either drop Dave a note here or email him direct.

    And don't forget to check your photo collection for images - see Lesley's post above.

    Hi Folks,

    This last portion is, unfortunately, a bit premature. At this point, we're keeping the team small for simplified communications. However, we hope to go public soon, and would love your input then. By the end of January seems certain, and very possibly sooner.

    Meanwhile, feel free to write me or submit terms in this forum, especially if they seem 'off the beaten track'. If you can include a rough definition and/or a source, that would be a big help.

    "Just an update on the Junk Rig Glossary... Lesley is working on mounting it [webmaster note: the Wiki] at the JRA [i.e. on the site], but has run into difficulties. She, Bruce Weller and Shemaya Laurel are staying on to take it through the feedback/edit phase, and eventually into whatever user supported form it takes on.
