    Sailing season ending in Finland. Today both Vanharouva and Oscars boat started their
    life on land as the last sailboats in our region. This is a very sad day knowing that there are 5-6 month of winter ahead. I hope that all you, whos homewaters do not freeze, really relize how privilegied you are. Happy sailing to all members still floating with a strong feeling of envy.

    It's great to hear that everything is working out for you, Robin. 
    I hope you'll manage to sail west next year. Even to sail through Åland to Sweden would be such an enjoyable cruise. I loved it when Tystie came through that way in 2004, just touching Finland at Turku. Highlights were the raising of the midsummer pole, and the music festival at Naantali. Good times!

    I have now made two 5 day singlehanded cruises with Vanharouva to test the rig and the skipper. The first was mainly in the outer archipelago of the eastern gulf of Finland and the weather was mostly fine. All went well and the skipper was satisfied with both the rig and the windvane. The second cruise was offshore  to Estonia. The sail across The gulf of Finland was in a NE 9-11 m/s and the seaway was interesting because the wind shifted strength and direction all the time. The boat rolled and was swinging 30 degrees in all directions and everything worked well. The sail in opposite direction started in  the same NE 12m/s and a for these waters really impressive seaway. Beating out from a weather shore to safe distance from land took 3 hours and then the skipper was satisfied with the test and returned to Estonia to make a new start the next day in better conditions. Nothing broken, everything functioning including the skipper. This means that I can start planning
    next summers cruising with confidence. I have a dream of sailing to Norway but depends if I can be away from home that long ( with permission from the wife)

    you are right off course with the reefing. My comment was about the fact that I thought that she was heeling too much for a given windstrength. The explanation was  that I had forgotten to fit the sail with telltails and I had the sail sheeted in too hard. Now with telltales I have discovered that she should be sailed with eased sheets and speed and not to try to gain too much height which off course also reduces heeling.
    Thanks for your engagement and your friendly comments. For the first time in years I have been sailing her alone and with a new wane I  made yesterday it is a sheer joy to sail alone as I usually did before I got the parkinsondiagnosis. The weather here is awful with
    strong winds and rain, I wish you all better conditions

    I echo Arne's comments on reefing. On the wind, Tystie goes slower if she has too much sail up when a squall comes, faster if I drop a panel or two. It's easy, so I don't hesitate to do it. Downwind, steering is easier if I adjust the sail area so that I achieve my cruising speed of just under 7 knots, without trying to press on too hard. Again, it's easy, so I do it.

    If your boat is heeling too much, it is only because you forgot my second advice - to make use of the simple reefing of the JR :-) ! This afternoon I finished scrubbing Johanna’s bottom and then went for a little sail - not in Johanna but in the Oslo dinghy, Broremann, also with a JR. The wind was quite steady, varying between low and high F3 which meant that the trip started with 6 panels, then the 7th was hoisted but then on the final upwind leg I once again dropped panel 7.

    It’s so easy, just engage the tiller brake (Broremann would run astray without a hand on the tiller)... let go the sheet to depower the rig... release the yard and luff h. parrels and adjust the sail area,... retrim the parrels and then finally haul in the sheet and take off again. As said, so easy: it probably takes no more than 20-30seconds.

    after 982 difficulties the boat is almost ready. The rig works well especially in light winds, thanks to Arnes advice not to save in sailarea. The generous camber causes perhaps too much heeling in stronger winds but the light wind performance is more important in our waters summertime.
    I am very pleased with the wind vane, it works beautifully. Maybe I will need a vane for strong winds and perhaps one for extreme light wind especially downwind.

    Robin, I think your boat deserves to be "Boat of the Month" . I suggest you send a copy of the photo to the webmaster. Since you are Finnish, do you happen to know another Finnish junkrig man, Valtteri Vanhala?
