    Bonjour

A video from Steve Hickey on sheet-to-tiller on a junk rig.

The  Steersman looks to be an interesting and innovative system. If it can be made to work with a junk rig it would certainly open up the self steering options.

For what it is worth I have found that my yacht 'Footprints' will steer herself very happily at least close-hauled with the tiller held slightly to windward (weather helm) with a lashing, balanced by a very strong shock cord spring to leeward. This was in ocean conditions with 25 to 30 knots wind and rough sea conditions. It took a while to balance the helm after any sail changes but the boat held a course for up to 8 hours at a time with this set up. This was before I built my new rudder. Now that I have a new  well balanced rudder with almost neutral helm in a lot of conditions it would be interesting to try some sort of sheet to tiller system. I am not sure though what would happen reaching and downwind where there is a lot of yawing going on and the need for larger helm corrections, especially when surfing down waves.

    This isn't exactly sheet-to-tiller but here's a demonstration of my bungie-tacking system

Just to note that I'm aware of the thread Sheet to tiller self steering, windvanes, and autopilots from 2014 and will be passing all that on.

In the next few weeks Rob Chicken of Steersman will be coming aboard Tammy Norie to take a look at a junk rig and think about whether the Steersman (or something similar) can be made to control a junk rigged boat.  Rob got in touch with me last year because of my posts on the YBW forums.

I'd like to make sure Rob is well informed about junk rig sheet-to-tiller systems, so I'd be grateful if JRA folks could point me at existing information, or especially if you could describe your own experiences.

Also, it would probably hep if someone has a two-mast rig in the Solent and would like to show it working to Rob.  I suspect the results would be quite different.
