Thank you Eric and Patrick for your welcomes.  I'm happy to be here.

Patrick, my masts:  the main mast measures 13.5M in length, 0.22M at the base, and 0.11M at the top, with a straight taper from top to base.  The foremast measures 11.33M in length, 0.22M at the base, and 0.11M at the base with a straight taper from top to base.

The existing masts I believe to be original to the boat which would make them approximately 40 years old.  They are no longer fit for service.  They are solid round timbers.

The area surrounding the boatyard I'm in has apple orchards which use treated round timbers to hold wires upon which they espalier the apple trees.  I can't help but wonder if the source for the farm timbers could be on a trail to larger such as I need.

Alternatively I've started conversation with Woodspar in Locmariaquer, WNW of Nantes.  They can build hollow masts.

My preference is to get solid timbers, and have them delivered here.  I can dress them and have them mounted on the deck trees so that I can cruise the canals until I reach open ocean.  But, I'll not turn my back on hollow masts if that is the option left open.

This is my first foray into boats and sailing.  I certainly appreciate the help you provide.

    Hello Michael,
I live in south of France. What would be the size of your masts, ie. overall length and diameter?
Are you looking for plain masts (timbers) or do you plan to buid them?
I could inquire for you, it only involves some web search and telephone calls.

    Hello,

Pursuing a dream of many years, and having become bored with life as it was, I've decided to purchase a sailboat and learn to sail.  Also, at the age of sixty-nine, if I'm going to do it, it's best done now before accident or aged infirmity makes it untenable.

I've agreed to buy Alianco from Dermot Doyle.  I'm near the end of severing ties I've had in the USA, i.e., selling everything (nearly).  With good fortune I'll be arriving in Castelsarrasin where Alianco is located by the end of the second week of July.  Then the real adventure begins.

Sure, it won't be all sunny skies and fair winds.  There is much to learn and much to do to make Alianco shipshape and myself sailing worthy.  I've read much here in JRA, and no doubt I'll be asking questions of you kind folk who give your time and knowledge.

My first question: Does anyone know of a competent quality surveyor knowledgeable about steel hulled sailing vessels in the south of France?  Alianco is located in Castelsarrasin, about 2/3 of the way from Bordeaux to Toulouse on the Canal latéral à la Garonne.

Second question:  Does anyone know where I can purchase douglas fir round timbers (power poles?) in the south of France?  Alianco currently has solid timber masts, though they are not now suitable for safe use.  The farms in Castelsarrasin use solid timbers for supporting espaliered apple trees, so it's possible I could source mast size timbers from the same source.
