Hi Jeff,
You'll need at least to borrow a copy of Practical Junk Rig, the book that we all keep referring to. It contains every last thing that you need to know to design, build and sail a junk rig. That will tell you about the factors concerned in positioning the mast.
I see the the Silhouette mk3 has a sail area of 209 sq ft in her main + genoa, and that would be a good starting point.
Having sailed Fantail several times now, I'm very pleased with the way this design has worked out, with the forward raked mast and fanned sail. I would favour it for all boats up to about 28 ft. Photos in the photo gallery, and a sail drawing in "Your online file storage/Drawings/David's doodles Raven 26", and also in Annie's conversion. It can be scaled down to 209 sq ft very easily, if you like it. The next magazine e-supplement, due to be published very soon, will contain an article by Annie on how she made the conversion.
