How dreadful!  You'd think even a blind and drunk watchkeeper would have seen something the size of Princess Taiping - or was he blind drunk and thought he was hallucinating?

Container ships are becoming something of a menace: if they are not running onto reefs and killing thousands of seabirds with their leaking oil, they're running down innocent sailing vessels.  My rule at sea was always to steer for their stern: easy to do with junk rig, much more difficult with Other Rigs.

Here's a long, scientific paper on "The Design and Recreation of a 17th Century Taiwanese Junk" (3.5MB):
In it, there is a reference to the Princess Taiping: "Princess Taiping sailed to San Francisco from Taiwan in 2008, but was hit by a large container ship and sunk in the return trip just offshore of Taiwan earlier in this (2009) year".

This is another big, newly-built junk, but I can't find an English name for her:

Translating the youtube pages into english tells me that she is a replica of a Taiwan ship of 1706.

I also lost a lot of the text containing pearls of wisdom and still am struggling with posting piccies.  But when I type my usual waffle, like now, the last couple of letters of each line disappear into the right-hand margin.  I just assumed it was something to do with Wild Apricot.  Fortunately, once my comment is posted, the lines are complete once more, so my wondrous prose is not mangled, causing wailing and gnashing of teeth from those who hang on my every word. (Yeah, right!)

To return to topic.  The quilting is quite dramatic and even though I suspect that the pragmatic explanations are correct, there is a bit of me that would like to think there is some inscrutable Oriental rationale behind it.  Now that I am getting 'used to' the cambered sail, my aesthetic sense is coming also to appreciate it.  There is more of a 'Chinese' look to the sails.  I suspect that I fell for the fan shape for the same reason.  It's as well I have sensible friends who can point me in the direction of pretty and practical!

    Peter and Dudley

That was funny; on my pc (Windows XP and Explorer) the text I wrote came above or below the photos so nothing disappeared. In the posting from Karlis, the photos were inserted with text "around" it, but no text seemed to go missing there either. Maybe one must add the photos in a separate posting after the text to avoid problems?

Anyway, here is the main part of the text that accompanied the photo of Broremann's sail:

                                       **********************

" Now  I have experimented a bit. The photo below was 400 pixel.

It shows Broremann's sail. Note the shadows from the lee lazyjack and mastlift. Dispite being made with the barrel method, the vertical curves in the panels are quite similar to those achieved with the shelf foot method. The reason could be that this sail is hauled a bit tauter along the battens than Johanna's sail is. Not so many wrinkles along the battens either."

No great or important prose , so you didn't miss that much...

    Cheers, Arne

Yes I have the same problem and I do need the missing words of wisdom! Regards Dudley Soulsby

And here is the same photo at 200pixel. Let's se what happens

PS: It appears that 300pixel is the biggest photo that wil fit in here

Arne, nice to see some photos appearing on this forum. Where you post a large picture file say 400 pixels I find you can view the full photo by clicking on it which may be useful for showing detail.

PPS: Oooops. Those photos above disappeared after a couple of days. My fault. The photos I paste in here seem not to be real, but just links to photos on the web  -  In my case to photos on my member's album. When I removed photos there, the link had nowhere to find the source photo. Now let me see if I just insert the header photo of Broremann's sail. By clicking on it you may be able to enlarge it in two steps. The original is 600pix wide:
