    Hello Julien,

What you need to do is to stop the mast heel from moving, both side to side and up and down. Alloy against alloy makes a terrible noise!

I made hard wood plug for the bottom of my mast, with a tapered end. This fits into a tapered socket. I made it loose, so that there was no difficulty in alignment, then poured casting polyurethane into the gap (having put release agent on the plug).

    Hi Julien,
    welcome aboard!

My two last boats have had aluminium masts similar to what you describe. The compression loads are not so high on a JR mast, so I have just let the naked mast tube stand on the sole of the mast step, made from plywood.

If you are nervous that the mast shall damage the step, you can always cut out a round plate of aluminium and drop it into the mast step beore stepping the mast.

Here are a couple of write-ups showing some of the rigging jobs in my present boat, Ingeborg.

Hello everyone and thank you for proposing such an interesting site.

I apologize for writing to you with the help of a translator but I know too few English words unfortunately.

I need your experiences. I build a mast made of an alloy tube and a GPR mast top. My question is the following:

Does the mast (tube) fit in its mast step as it is, or do you install inside the mast step a rigid sole between the tube and the bottom of the mast step?

I find the tube sharp-cutting and i wonder if, when the boat hits the hollow of the waves, from top to bottom, little by little the tube would not sharp-cut the bottom of the mast step? I speak particularly to people who have a tube or a candelabrum for mast and who made their wooden mast step.

I hope I have succeeded in making myself understood. Thank you in advance for your valuable answers.
