    Very good idea Alan to add winglets to your ruder.

    I hope to meet you again in the Bay of Islands next March.Present time in Queenstown with our NZ familly.

    Can I also just say. ..how v v  grateful to Arne etc. Your ruthlessly logical thinking really works! !!!!! Paul was right up there too. .After all LC s performance was the initial evidence. ..and both sources suggested 15 %! !  Greater camber for the sails might well be the way to go!  Isn't it great that people give it a go?

    I think my reply was lost. Zebedee s  performance has improved dramatically. .just as Annie described. I was in rough conditions full sail mind , but was able to tack , which would have been impossible .

    Before,  if I had tried to gain speed by upping the helm Zebedee would simply have rounded up. Now,  he gains a lot of speed which makes going about happen

    . I think this is because the rudder is no longer producing turbulence.  The 15 % camberof the rudder  is stopping this effect. No idea how the top and bottom plates work but maybe just keeping the water flowing over the rudder. 

    The other big factor is my Arne type sails 12 % fore and 8 % main .

    I can understand the apparent dramatic improvement in the performance of Zebedee. When I built and installed the new rudder on Footprints there did seem to be an overall improvement in how the boat handled and performed. I suspect that with Footprints it was the proper foil shape for the new rudder, and closing up the large gap between the skeg and the leading edge of the rudder, which must have considerably reduced turbulence.

    I can't help it, but have to quote myself from Chapter 2 of "The Cambered Panel Junk Rig":

    "Rudders

    Boat designers generally put too little effort in rudder design. In my opinion there is no such thing as too good rudder control. A good rudder not only makes the sailing trips more enjoyable, but also safer. It may be the difference between a successful or missed tack in a critical situation.

    On a junk-rigged boat, particularly on a sloop there is a need for an efficient rudder."

    I hope Alan remembered to take photos of the rudder before launching.

    Well,I steered Zebedee for the entire course in Tall Ships 2018 and again this year.  I would say that the rudder has transformed the boat.  He was very different to sail, noticeably faster, noticeably more responsive and, best of all, tacked reliably.  It was sheer joy to see him walking past other boats to windward and leaving them firmly in his wake when we were running.

    We had a bit of luck with wind shifts and an excellent team on board, this year, but even so, I think it was a completely honest win by Zebedee.  He'll never do it again -  his handicap will reflect the new rudder!!

    Do you think the modifications you made to the rudder had something to do with it?"

    This is what we want to know  -  the end result ;-) ...
