The mast bend looks a bit unusual.  I wonder if the rope forestay is affecting it?  Was there a lot of wind in the sail?  One thing to remember is that, as you reef and the yard comes down, the loads transfer to the sturdier lower sections of the mast.  With half the sail reefed and a good wind, the rig is usually as solid as a rock.  In light winds, with the sail fully hoisted, mast bend is less of an issue, though it still seems like lot from the photo.  This stage of the project, from my experience of conversion, is always a bit anxious.  Good luck, and well-done.

You probably know this already, but with the post open, I double clicked on the photo, then right clicked and clicked on "save in a new tab", at which point an enlargeable image appears (the right way up!)

    Hi all,

The sail bundle ex boom and yard got aboard last night, and today I had it almost fully hoisted (ex boom) - YIPPEE!!! Almost, because although the canal basin is sheltered the occasional gust made me nervous.

Please see the pic below. I hope it can be zoomed on. The gusts were not the only thing making me nervous! This is a job to be done in a flat calm but I didn't have that luxury, but no shore lines parted. This is the whole 50sqm sail (excluding the boom) hoisted but not fully up, with only a little bit of luff hauling parrel tension. Am I right to be worried about the bend in the top 1/3 of the mast? I hope it can be seen. (The two lines leading forward are not any attempt at a forestay, but just a rope on the potential jib-stay).

My camera will not now allow me to upload a photo of the whole sail. I will try to put some pics on my profile page. I am pleased with the sail. Not a bad first attempt. With a bit of luff hauling parrel on MOST of the diagonals disappear. Many of the lashings etc are temporary while I experiment with the set-up. I hope to get back over there this week to sort a temporary sheet, and for light winds to have a trial. mast bend permitting! Thank you, Arne, your directions gave me the confidence to set about patterns and sail-cloth, if not the sewing with which I had to get help.

    All best,

    Pol
