    Marie G has a sail of heavy spinnakercloth. The sail has withstood Wind up to 16 m/s With gusts up to 24. The sail has bendt 2 yards an 2 battens. Yard 1: mast section of 45x 65, 2mm thick wall, and yard 2: round ø 65mm 3mm wall. Both bended when flying, 12 knots+ before the Wind. The sailcloth is prone to chafe and uv, so ideally used for racing or weekendsailing. The boat is 33 ft and sail area is 55 sq.m. I am very pleased with it, and recommend Tuchwerkstatt and Sebastian Henschel any time.

    A query on the cloth weights - 1.5oz/ sq yd is 65gsm, and I would think that is too light for anything bigger than a small dinghy. It's not so much a question of strength and stability, as robustness against chafe and general long term wear and tear, if used for more than day sailing.

    110gsm, or ~ 3 oz/sq yd would be about right as a minimum weight, I think and the softer the better.

    Thanks Arne,

    the boat is listed as 1000 lbs./ 454 kgs. displacement. I'll see if I can get a sample of the medium weight cloth to check the stiffness. I assume it might cause problems with reefing if too stiff. I'm a bit reluctant to use the spinnaker cloth for the entire sail, how do you feel about making the upper panels two with a heavier weight cloth?

    Alternative #1 is in my view a bit on the heavy side. I used Odyssey III of the same weight for  the 20sqm sail of my Frøken Sørensen (Story 1 and 2). In light winds I felt that the sail struggled a bit with filling, in particular for the first half hour after having been stowed for a few days.

    On your smaller sail I think that the 135g/sqm polyester cloth sounds promising, if it not of  very stiff material. By ensuring that the edges of the sails are strong, it is unlikely that this cloth will cause any trouble when cruising. What is the displacement of your boat?

    The nylon spinnaker cloth would be my first choice for dinghies and for daysailing with sails up to maybe as much as 20sqm. I would then be careful to use a sail cover when leaving the boat.

    I used some sort of light nylon (weight ?) on the 10sqm sail for my dinghy, Broremann (Story 1 and 2), and the panels inflated in the lightest winds, and never gave any trouble.
