Dimitry Orlov has a new article in his houseboat-junk design Quidnon blog about his new sail ideas.
Quidnon: sails revisited
Addressing an idea about "one tack significantly more efficient than the other", he proposes batten standoffs fixed between the batten and the far side of the batten parrel on the mast side of the sail.
I'm skeptical about the reduced efficiency claim: that's been tested by members in actual sailing practice, does it stand up? I'm also suspicious about the added complexity of the new rigging. However, I don't think I've seen this idea in the JRA before.
Any designer or offshore sailor comments?
