Hinges in wooden battens

    My, uh, interest in bendy battens is purely... academic. Yeah, that's it... 
    But it is right there alongside my straight battens, easy to remove for experimentation, being laced to the off-mast side of our flat, dark blue sails.

    I like the one in Nl 47, but I would worry about the 180 turn of the webbing around the edge of the stainless steel tube. I would think about putting a vertical pivot bolt through both tube and batten, near the end of the tube. The hole for a pin like this will be drilled through the neutral axis of the batten, and will have negligible effect on its strength.

    See page 21 "Yet another hinge design..." in NL43 Aug 2004 and Bottom of page 3 in NL47 Aug 2006. Both are available for download in the News Letter PDF section of this website.

    Of the two designs, I think I prefer the one in NL47. Much simpler and much less work.
