Roughly what angle of sheet is too steep, in your experience(s)?

Is there a reasonable limit to the AR? Yes, it lies somewhere around 2.25, and the upper part of a sail to this AR will require sheeting, not only well aft, but also out to the weather side.

You know, one of the most boring truisms in life springs to mind: Moderation In All Things.

Whether you are talking about eating or drinking, vice or virtue or aspect ratio, this dreadful phrase always seems to ring true.  (Dreadful, because deep down inside I think everyone has a wild and free spirit that wants to be extreme in at least some ways, but knows it will all end in tears.  Sigh.)

I have found hi-AR sails to be easier to handle than lo-AR sail, but within these two limitations:

    • You may end up with a too tall mast for a given sail area
    • Unless the boat has a long tail (or boomkin), the angle of the sheet to the upper sheeted batten will soon end up too steep. Others have reported about problems with too steep sheets.

The problem with the cloth came to my mind too as soon as I had sent the topic :)

But let's forget that for a while. Is there a reasonable limit to the AR, and are there some bonuses to be gained if using a sail with a very high AR (let's say 2.5-3)?

I don't want to say stupid or catastrophic, but instead I'll be diplomatic and say inadvisable.

You made the sail from 90gsm cloth that wasn't particullarly stable, as I found when I used it for my wind vane. I don't think it would last long in the larger sail.

My sail is 22 sq m with a batten length of 3.375m and is almost as high as I want to sheet - the angle of the upper sheet is getting very steep.

While planning the conversion of my Galion 22 and thinking about the work and money spending ahead, I saw the almost unused sail I made for my Joe 17.

I came up with a great/stupid/catastrophic (pick one) idea of expanding the sail vertically.

The sail is Arne's Johanna-type with AR 2.10, boom length of about 3m and SA of about 14m2.

The Galion needs maybe 22-24m2 of sail and I was thinking of boom length of 4m. But let's assume that a suitable spot for the mast (with boom length of 3m) could be found and I would add four panels (each about 2m2), would this very high-AR sail be a *add your pick here?

The sail would have eleven panels. Would sheeting or something else (besides a high mast) make more trouble than benefit (in cost and labour savings)?

Edit: I made the sail from separate, hinged panels, which would make adding panels very easy.
