What I would like to see and what would help me now, is to see some close-ups of  a sail's details. I would like to see how the battens attach as well as the boom and yard. The little that I am able to see in videos and photos shows me that not everyone is making their sails exactly like everyone else. This wouldn't take much effort. Next time you are on your boat take a couple of close-up shots and post them. I'm sure other newbies would like this too.

Hi Graeme! Sorry to be so long replying. Since before you sent this link,  I've been hit by a series of winter viruses that has kept me in bed most of the day. I've been out of the loop, under the weather, out of sorts...... I'm not even allowed to talk or whisper for a week! I'll look at these videos again and get back to you.

    Howsit,

This is definitely something I would be able to look into in the next 4 years. One of the things I have tasked myself with has been learning how to shoot and edit video footage and all things going well I will have enough free time (I certainly have the inclination!) to travel and meet up with the legends here on the JRA and work on putting together some media for the Association.

Bruno that is a beautiful video, I think just the sort of thing Jim was suggesting.

Because I didn't quite understand how to put a video on the site, here is a link to a video of Lakatao taken by a drone around Nouméa. I hope it will work!

Jim, and anyone else interested: I just stumbled on a You-tube video of a junk-rigged boat sailing, which was shot with a drone.

It does show what a great idea it could be.

In case you haven't seen it:

It was taken by a company at www.takenbydrone.co.uk

Unfortunately no volunteers came forward to attempt any aspect of this task. The Committee has decided, after much deliberation, to contract Andrew Walters to prepare a simple animation to explain how a junk rig works. If successful, it will be added to the website as a feature. I have posted our financial commitments to the Committee Expenses section.

Is there any member, or someone a member knows, interested in developing any of the ideas suggested originally by Jim?

If anyone has the time and skills to advance these developments please contact me by email on

At least we just saw what is possible today. Amazing. It solves several problems at once. One of my first questions before purchasing a drone is what are the operational limits. I'm thinking, in particular, what is the upper limit of the ambient winds? You don't want your precious device blown away down wind.

Thanks for bringing me up to date on the Lily drone. It's a shame they couldn't make the financial side work, but the article in your link suggests other drones are now on the market that do similar things, just more expensive. Given the history of tech I expect the price will come down in time, and the capabilities will increase. I can see a big market out there for all those real life action daredevils.
