Percentage lead of junk rig sail relative to mast

Has their been any study or discussion about the effects of how much the junk sail overlaps the mast supporting it?  I imagine there are many effects from the 'balance' while tacking, and the overall balance while under way as to steerage and C/E effects.  So, for discussion purposes, moving from a centered, square-sail that is center-balance to gaff rig with no overlap of the mast, is there an optimal point where the sail has best function for lift, upwind and down, versus mounting and balance at the attachment point to the mast supporting it?
