Some time ago I found a conversion table for sail measures on the website of Challange Sails. As it seems to be not online any longer, I put a PDF copy into my documents folder in the BOX area.

There you can find a translation into an Excel spreadsheet as well. This also contains the -now dead- link to it's origin. Use the spreadsheet at your own risk as I did not check it for faults -;)

    Hope this clears some confusion..

Aaah, many thanks, Peter.  That's what I was remembering.  Nice to know I'm not quite gaga, yet!

And they can be found in Members' Area in Your Files.

In an old Norwegian book about boats they have a quick rule of thumb:

Going from British ounces, to metric, multiply by 33 and
going from US ounces to metric, multiply by 44.

That is close enough, I guess.

    Hi all,

That I found on a french site:

    1 oz/Sq Yd = 33,99 g/m² (40 gr/m² = 1,18 oz/Sq Yd)

    (SailMaker's ounces = smoz) ,  1 smoz = 42,83 g/m² et 40 gr/m² = 0,93 smoz.

I saw that, Arne, but I thought I remembered someone posting something more complete, including USAnian measures, Imperial and Metric.  Maybe I dreamt it.  The trouble is, when it's quoted in ounces on an Australian website - are they talking USA ounces or UK ounces?  Sigh.

    Annie,
I searched my list of favourite topics ( http://goo.gl/69ogMi
    and came over this:

    Fast conclusion:
    1 ounce/sq.yd = 33.91g/sqm

Didn't some clever person post a link or something to help convert eg US sail cloth weight to metric?  I've looked in the Good Sail Cloth for JR thread, but couldn't find it.  Maybe someone could post it again here.  Roger Scott is exploring different cloths for his next sail and I'm trying to get a feel for the ones he's looking at.
