Yes, I think you've got to where you want to be. One third balance area is fine, and will reduce helm loadings to a manageable amount when the wind blows, as well as in light airs.

I had hoped to motor down to Kippford this wekend, but in the event was unable to so do.  So I went out for a sail, to try the newly-canting sail.  On a dead run, boat speed was between 1.8 and 3.3 knots.  In other words, the wind was light to very light. Although these are very testing conditions for any selfsteering gear, the Hydrovane steered the boat at all times without any problem.  I take this to be a very good omen for future performance of the canted sail. I estimate that one-third of the sail was "forward" of the mast.  That's about all I can get with my sail - but I am hoping that it will be enough.  On the basis of today's trial, I rather think that it might be, and will allow the boat to be handled by the Hydrovane on all points of sail, and not only upwind.  Does it sound as if I am correct in this?
