I am thinking of buying a Heavenly Twins catamaran. Whilst having amazing accommodation for a 26' boat, I am not sure if it will keep me happy with its sailing performance.
So rather than comit to a full junk rig, and have a pointy rig to store, the first measure is to experiment with a junk jib.
I have put a quick sketch in the Technical Illustrations Forum.
It may only need 3 battens, the 3rd giving a storm sail size.
It is shown with downhauls, hopefully paired. The clew comes back along the first batten / boom.
It does not stack so well as the batten all get shorter, so the downhaul important. It also give a kicking strap of sorts.
Will it work? Will it be worthwhile?
Compared to a roller genoa it will not have an overlap, but: easy to mend, will hold shape of wind, no flogging (& do I hate flogging genoes), better shape when reefed.
The Heavenly Twins has a relatively large jib with the mast at the front of the cockpit. Reefing the main is easy, so the Bermudan main may as well be kept.. The baby stay would have to be removed or move to the gunwhale such that the jib can swing past.
(This idea would be even better for a Prout, they have very small mainsailes and huge unwieldy genoas)
