    Mark, that's great news. I can handle Excel spreadsheets (in Open Office) so I'd be happy to titivate them if you wish, and then upload to the site, with suitable publicity. Just send as an attachment to an email. Thanks.

    I will set something up in Excell,  not that I am very proficient.  Others can then take it and add any fancy stuff if they wish. 
    Each time someone posts some info, such as from the link to Ming Ming II, it can be added.
    Will make a start this weekend.

    What I've done is to export all the members profile data as a spreadsheet, and then stripped it down so as to show only the members name and email, the boat's details, the sail areas and the mast details. I'll email it to you, and then you can see the depressing large number of blank cells that need to be filled in. We could try an "email to all members", as we do from time to time, but they don't often result in a flood of new information. Or perhaps you could target those members whose mast you particularly want to learn about, and email them directly. 

    Then it'll be over to you to work with the spreadsheet and see whether you can make it into a useful tool for specifying a mast for a new rig.

    Thanks David. So it looks as if what's needed is for Mark to consider exporting the data 'as is' into what would be a fairly large spreadsheet/database using a format that could be read by anyone (Mac, Windows etc) and for him to store it on the JRA site, rather than in Box, so that all members would have easy access to it. He'd need to make this a monthly or perhaps quarterly task, and to find someone to cover him when he's away... What do you think, Mark? Remember we can add extra fields to Profiles if you need them.

    The members profile does indeed provide a place for storage of all the data. We can indeed export any or all of the profile data as a spreadsheet. So the wheel exists, and we don't need to reinvent it. And so what is needed is for members to fill in their data. Or if they don't, won't or can't, for someone else to fill it in, as it becomes known.

    You can use the "advanced search" in the members boats directory to winkle out information, but there are limitations to the usefulness of this. I think that ultimately a spreadsheet, with its ability to calculate and compare, is better, but it needs to be updated from time to time, by re-exporting the data.

    Thanks for that suggestion. There would seem to be a couple of ways of doing it:

    1 Your JRA profiles already contain fields (and more can be added if necessary) for entering such information in the existing 'masts' section. Keeping it there would mean that members wouldn't just have a single database to keep up to scratch, and you'd be in control of your own data. It should be easy to export selected fields to create comparison tables, though I haven't tried that yet. David may well done so.

    2 Create a datasheet/spreadsheet and store it on Box. This would be easy to get started but shared documents (Box files are only available to members who want to get stuck into Box) are easily corrupted. You'd need to keep a regular backup.

    The difficulty with both is that some members aren't too hot/keen on entering data as their profiles and our boat location maps show. So it's a good idea, but why reinvent the wheel when we have the profile system already? David, can you comment on this, please?

    Yes, a spreadsheet would be the way to go. Then, eventually, there could be some calculations that link the mast size to the displacement and righting moment of the boat.
    We added a lot of fields to the members profile, so that they could fill in all the sizes of parts of their rigs. Some have done so, so this could be a useful place to dig for data.

    It sounds like a great idea!  In terms of access a spreadsheet added to the 'your files' section of the website would work.  With regard to info included, the following is my initial stab...

    Hull length/beam/displacement

    Sail area/design

    Mast height/angle /diameter/wall thickness/material/purchased from.

    Of course you could also add a classification by boat e.g. kingfisher 22... contessa 26 etc. etc.

    On the hope I may be using it in the not too distant future, how about a data base for masts (and perhaps other aspects).

    There is much information being posted giving technical data for mast.  It would be a very good resource if this was gathered togethered in a single data base.  Who should do this (I would be pleased to make a stab)?  What form?  How would it be placed on the website?  What key inforamtion shoul dbe included?
