Mariposa – Junk Rigged Contessa 26
The legendary Contessa 26 from the workshop of Jeremy Rogers is a marque that's taken several intrepid sailors around the world, one of the most famous being Tania Aebi.
This one is Junk Rigged:
Solid wood mast, keel stepped.
Galvanised steel mast collar at the deck.
Galvanised steel frame supporting the mast from foot to deck.
Cambered seven panel sail made by Chris Skanes
Aluminium battens one side, doubled with PVC on the other.
Three part tackle on halyard.
PJR sheeting and running lines.
No inboard motor, 6hp Mariner two stroke long shaft on transom bracket.
Stern anchor on massive roller.
Simrad TP10 tiller pilot.
100w semi-flexible solar panel and controller.
Plastimo cockpit compass, Navman depth sounder.
All through-hulls removed, except cockpit drains.
Smaller windows installed for heavy weather use.
Flawless spray job on hull in Fiat Rosso.
CopperBot antifoul, no growth.
Origo single burner stove.
100 litre water capacity, in 10 x 10 litre jugs with taps.
Innovative (if I say so myself) clothes storage in hanging tote bags.
Fenders & lines.
Boat hook.
And a bunch of other regular boaty paraphernalia.
Mariposa was sailed happily around the UK’s south west coast for years, then she was bought by Peter Scandling who stripped her out, replaced and fibreglassed the bulkheads, re-did the rudder pintles, and a thousand other things that were major structural items. A history of his work on the boat can be found in two articles for the JRA magasine (the most recent two issues).
When I bought her I did some interior carpentry, and set about accessorising her: Origo stove, 100w solar panel with controller, interior LEDs, 10 x 10 litre water jugs, 6hp Mariner outboard, stern anchor and chain locker, inflatable tandem canoe/kayak (Gumotex Palava), Simrad TP10 tiller pilot, did some rewiring including a second cig lighter outlet, carpet, re-bedded stanchion mounts, replaced mast wedges.
Lying in Torpoint Yacht Harbour, Corwall (just opposite Plymouth).
Dozens of photos available, email me at matt@waite.net and I'll send you some.
Price? She ‘owes’ me £10,000 ish, but then she's only worth what someone is willing to pay for her.
I think £8,500 is fair, JRA member discount not withstanding...
