Wanted: high latitude-friendly junk

    I have some friends wanting to change from their existing boat to something more simple and husky.  It has to sail well, they are interested in steel and are looking around the 35ft mark.  Their intention is to explore in the higher latitudes and they would prefer not to have to do too much motoring.  They are not on a ridiculously tight budget.  If anyone knows of anything that might do, please post here or contact me direct.  Thanks.

    Two questions: I see you have a Sunbird rig: are the masts Needlespar?
    The sails look flat, with standard alloy battens: is that correct?

    sorry, but I do not know what "needlespar" means.( my translation program neither )
    The masts are made from aluminium, 190 mm at the bottom, 70mm at the top.
    Wallthickness is 4mm at the bottom and 6mm at the top.
    The aluminium is eloxated.
    And yes - the sails are flat with standart alu - battens......

    A problem could be, that the boat is in Sardegna at the moment......
    but also a nice trip through france .... :-)

    Riks, Needlespar manufactured masts etc for Sunbird Marine for many years, and are still in business as far as I know. See that link.

    Nice boat - had some communication with the seller when it was listed back in July. It's probably a modified Roberts 36, but definitely not a Spray as claimed.

    My own boat would be ideal for high latitude sailing, a Joshua 40 designed by Jean Knocker and built by Meta Tarare in Lyon. Since a big wave smashed me into the deck in a F10 and damaged my back, I am unable to sail at present so have regrettably put my Joshua on the market whilst the bone doctors get me sorted out. Presently she is ketch rigged, but I feel she would make a lovely junk. I do have a junk main sail and wooden battens, though no junk masts! She has a very small cockpit, is all steel and has a perspex view dome, vane steering, in date survival gear, jordan series drogue etc. Probably not what they are looking for, but just in case here is the link anyway http://www.theyachtmarket.com/boats_for_sale/839414/?searchid=6426255&page=1

    Thanks Dawn, but way too big and heavy.  As I said, my friends are looking for something around the 35ft mark.  Sorry to hear about the back problem: I hope that you are soon better and active once more.

    Such an injury makes me appreciate yet again, how a junk-rigged boat helps to minimise deck work.
