I like this quote from the contracostatimes article. I used to live in Taiwan, in summer the winds would be 30 to 40 knots on the coast, every day, so I know what the quote below is talking about:

""After the war, fishing companies were abandoning junks in favor of big motorized ships," said Mehlert, a Sacramento native who worked at the U.S. Consulate in China before joining the Free China crew.

But a handful remained active, and they caught the eye of fisherman Paul Chow.

He noticed that the junk sailors often didn't have radios to receive typhoon warnings, instead taking their cue to flee from the big boats that would turn around and head back to shore.

To Chow's frustration, the junks often beat the powered ships because they took advantage of high winds.""

An interesting dissertation about 'modern day' voyages in traditional junks.

I tried to get hold of a copy but didn't get very far with it. I got this reply from Robin Greenberg, the producer:

"Sorry, I'm not sure when/if I'll get set up with PayPal. Meanwhile,. If you're unable to arrange a bank cheque here, then you could get in touch with my new distributor in USA, Chip Taylor Communications who is handling overseas DVD sales, & credit card fine..

    Here is Chip's email:

    Chip Taylor <chiptaylorcomm@yahoo.com>"

Maybe someone else will have better luck.

I agree, fascinating - this new (2012) DVD could be a worthwhile addition to the JRA Library. The trailer (on that site) is worth a look too. I've put the link in our Links section so that it doesn't get lost, and have added one to the organisation that's attempting to preserve the junk and get it back to Taiwan (more images and a video clip there).
