Quite a few professional seamen could knit, I am sure, since I know that boys learn(ed) to knit, sometimes. However, I am not among them, so this mast jacket was made by a good friend of mine. She is an eager knitter and hobby seamstress as well, so when I wondered if she could knit a simple coat, which could be buttoned onto the mast, she of course had to make it with a fancy pattern, taken from the district of Fana, sitting right south of the Bergen in Norway. Since such a knitted jacket, with buttons in the front, is called a kofte in Norwegien, a jacket to this pattern (with variations) is called a Fanakofte.
So Ingeborg’s mast now has her own fanakofte...
Cheers,
Arne
