A baby version of this boat, the 20 foot Black Feathers, was modified and raced in the Transpac (California to Hawaii) in 2008. A very readable book was written about both the experience and the modifications done for offshore racing. I don't know the big brother boat, but the pedigree seems good.

    Hi Tim,

The designer of this boat, Bill Lapworth, has a good reputation and the boat looks to be well-maintained, apart from the engine that needs work and besides, is gasoline (petrol), not the ultimate choice in my opinion, due to the risk of explosion, though some people are happy with it.  I think a small lightweight diesel engine would be a good upgrade.  A number of Cal designs have made tradewind ocean passages.  I think you could sail this boat to Hawaii and on to Tahiti with a few upgrades, such as a good windvane selfsteering gear and ground tackle.  If you kept the original rig, you'd want to take the mast down and check everything for ocean passages, probably replace the wire and mast fittings etc, but for your first season in local waters, I think you could just get on the boat and go.  Make sure you treat that gasoline engine with caution though.  I've seen two gasoline engines explode on boats and it wasn't pretty.  I also think this boat would convert to a junk sloop very nicely.  I converted my boat, Arion from bermudian rig several years ago.  Good luck

PS:  Things to check are the rudder, which can get tired after a lot of miles under the keel, and the keel itself.  Check the floors (structural members tying keel to hull, keelbolts if it has any (not sure if this keel is bolted on or part of the glass hull, and signs of any cracks where keel meets hull.

    Hi everyone,

I've been looking to buy a small sailboat to start cruising in lately and just came across this one:

I suppose this isn't strictly a junk rig question, although I would like to convert it after I've gotten a little cruising under my belt, but I figured I would post it here since the members of this forum tend to share my do it yourself, minimalist approach.

I'm 18 and from North Carolina, but I'm working on a salmon seiner in homer Alaska this summer. When I get off hopefully my crew share will be enough to buy a sailboat to live aboard. I hope to go offshore at some point.

What's the general consensus on Cal sailboats? Would the one above be suitable for offshore sailing after adequate preparation? I have lived on a boat for a couple months before, mostly motoring down the ICW, but my actual sailing experience is limited to day sails and crewing for informal races. How would this boat suit a beginner? So far I love the layout, headroom, and everything else about the boat (except the pointy rig). Should I hold out and look for a better boat?

    Tim
