Hi, as well as my search for a suitable 30 footer for conversion, I have found a Freedom 21 on trailer for ridiculous low price and am thinking of this as an interim boat.
Has anyone converted one of these smaller single mast boats to junk? I once spent a lot of money to survey and fly to a Freedom 30 ketch in the UK and left the sea trial appalled at how poorly it sailed.
Would the mast be in the correct location to take a junk rig given that the Freedom rig has all the area aft of the mast and a big roach VS the junk rig carries balance area forward of mast.
Also I assume the junk rig will be heavier with yard, battens, more industrial fittings and cloth weight. Given it is recommend to make the junk rig larger for light winds due to being able to reef quickly, will the F21 have the stability.
The F21 is a great camper boat with good performance. If the boat had NO rig reflected in the price then this would be a no brainer. But it has a good rig including simplified spinnaker.
I guess I am looking for a comment from someone who did this and said it was a great conversion.
Thanks.
