Thanks for inserting the link, Chris. My comments were a bit lost over in the Members events.
Further to Bryan's post about the speed of Oryx I might try and clarify the position. The Russell Boating Club held 3 events last Saturday - the All Comers, the Tall Ships and the Classic Boats. Oryx, being a catamaran, could only enter in the All Comers race. The All Comers race started 15 minutes before the other events and was sailed on a different course.
We could see that Oryx made a great start and was leading the fleet. When the fleet approached one of the islands ( it is the Bay of Islands!) Oryx lost the wind and was overtaken by all the other boats. At this point in time the race organisers decided to shorten the course. The shortened course was a little bit unusual as it required all the boats to jibe or go about and retrace their steps back to the start. This meant that Oryx went from last to first and she managed to stay in the lead all the way back to the finish. Some boats had to tack around the island to get back to where Oryx turned around. I guess this story is is bit too long and confusing for the newspaper! Oryx is certainly not slow and put in a fine performance.
