Don't worry, Jami. The junk rig stresses the boat less than bermudan rig, and those stresses are not in the same direction as for bermudan rig, being horizontal and in line with the deck and the bottom of the hull.  It will be quite easy to add some local reinforcement (just a square of thick plywood will do it) at deck level to support the tabernacle, and at the hull, the V-shape naturally contains the bottom of the tabernacle.

Junk rig revels in hard weather, and is so much easier to handle in squally conditions that you'll find the sailing much more relaxed than with bermudan rig. We'll help with getting the sizes and scantlings right, but the loadings on this size of boat are low, and it will be easy to get things over-strong without being over-heavy.

    Hello again,
I'm in the process of designing JR conversion on my 17ft JOE 17 trailer sailer.

What has surprised me is the sudden change of excitement turning into fear. This is because I'm planning on selling the bermudan rig and the modifications needed for my boat make it difficult to step back from the conversion.

But the most frightening part is the one concerning the right strength of the JR rig.

I often sail in quite harsh conditions, with a choppy sea and winds up to maybe 15 m/s.

    Something like this.

I have managed quite well with the bermudan rig, so the boat and the man are fine with this. The question is, will my DIY junk rig be?

I am very bad at math, and I'm afraid I'll struggle with findind the right strength fo the mast, a trailability-enabling tabernacle and most of all the added structures needed for the mast step and balsa-core deck in a boat without proper bulkheads. And the rig cannot be too heavy.

Reading the valuable info on this site is excellent, but does not seem to help the feeling - instead it keeps even new problem scenarios emerging from the stressed brain. Is this normal? How does one get over this?
