Hi Scott, I converted Arcadian from wheel to tiller when I converted to Junk Rig. I found the simplicity of the tiller reassuring and even though there were some balance problems to start with the helm was never unmanageable. Once the balance problems were addressed  by extending the keel she became easy to handle and I would not go back to the complications of wheel steering. The only time it was an issue was when reversing the boat under power when the helm could take charge if reversed at speed, but that is an issue even with a wheel.

All the best with the conversion, David.

So in gutting Mudita, I'm having to make decisions that I didn't foresee, mostly because opportunity arises when you've got the whole beast open.

I'm seriously considering removing the pedestal and wheel and replacing with a tiller.  I like the simplicity of a tiller;  fewer things to break; easier to rig self-steering options, and opens up the cockpit when at anchor.

However, I'm concerned about the loss of mechanical advantage should the new rig turn out to have a heavy helm at various points of sail. Actually, I'm worried about the helm issue no matter what.  Without headsails or a mizzen, what really can be done if I end up with poor behavior?

The rudder is not balanced, though it's a decent size on its skeg.  I don't relish the idea of fighting a tiller with high weather helm every time the wind gets up or I need to run off a bit.  Are these valid concerns?
