Insuring a junk rig conversion

    Well I have spoken to several insurers today and Navigators and General will offer fully comp if the conversion has the say so of a qualified surveyor. Yachting 24 could not help as the boat is built in 1975 and they only cover up to 40 years old. Pantaneus offered third party for twice the price of the N&G fully comp which was a bit puzzling. The N&G includes single handed cover which is a bonus. So thanks for your help and suggestions and now I seem to have solved this part of the puzzle.

    I have 3rd party insurance from Pantaenius for Weaverbird, as I did for Tystie. They have no problem with junk rig, but declined to offer comprehensive cover as the value was under their lower limit. They suggested that I should contact their sister company http://www.yachting24.co.uk/en for full cover, but I reckon that 3rd party is all I need.

    Have never had any problems getting insurance for my junk rig yacht here in New Zealand. When I sailed offshore several years ago I actually insured the boat through Royal Sun Alliance in the UK and they did not seem to have any problems with the fact it was a junk rig yacht sailing offshore.

    I have 3rd party but I did have comprehensive for a year. I have not had any problems with insuring my JR and my boat is owner built. I don't see why the type of rig should change things.

    I only have fairly cheap boats, so only need third party insurance...

    Hi

    I am considering converting my Westerly Centaur to junk rig. At the moment she is the standard Bermudan rig and I have her fully insured for UK Coastal and Ireland and single handed sailing. 

    I was in discussion today with my insurance broker and mentioned that I might like to change the rig and was astonished to be told that if I do, they will revoke my cover, as the boat will then be non standard!

    Presumably other members have converted boats from Bermudan to Junk, so how do you go about getting insurance? 

    Please let me know.
