Thanks David …for putting my mind at ease!

I was thinking along the same lines …plus…my mast is a few feet shorter then it COULD be …..so it will be approx 24-25 ft. above deck ….a very low aspect rig sure sure.

Well……you have helped my clear ,my mind …and now it is time to apply the first coat of primer.

    cheers.

Seems plenty strong enough to me even without the fiberglass. On my yacht Footprints which is 10 m overall with a 12 meter high mast and 53 square meter sail there is just a thickened area around the deck to approximately 50mm total thickness extending about 200mm beyond the mast circumference. The only other extra reinforcing is that the deck stringers fore and aft of the partners are tied together with a 12mm bronze rod either side of the partners.

You would only need the extra layers of fiberglass if you did not have all that thickness of plywood.

I have a friend who has 15 meter sailing catamaran with a 20 meter high free standing wing mast in each hull. The boat is built from foam sandwich and has done many ocean crossings. I asked him recently what extra reinforcing he did at the deck for the mast and his reply was 'just a few extra layers of fiberglass in addition to the existing deck layup', because there is of course no solid wood in his boat. One can only imagine the loads on a boat like this compared to the very low load junk rig.

HI everyone!! Sorry for the lack of updates here ….I have been VERY BUSY!

I should have my mast in in a week or so!!!!

I have one question: regarding glassing in my partners:

You can see a picture of it in my files under "Storfidra 25 junk conversion"

I used 3 layers of 3/4" plywood , generous fillets , and then used a wide fiberglass strip over the fillets before adding 2 complete layers of fiberglass cloth …and then 3 layers of thickened epoxy.

    IS THIS STRONG ENOUGH????????

My thought is: yes …but my neighbor just came by to scare me ….and said I also need a layer of fiberglass roving.

    What do you guys think???????

    thanks! more pics soon!!!
