Thanks Gavin. Yes we missed the northerlies; they'll come round again. Douarnenez, where we are now with Ti Gitu, is a great place to sit it out, so no worries. I think we'l be stopping every 30 nm for the next few weeks while we nurse ourselves back into the cruising lark. I find it quite tiring at the mo'. Good luck with all that work. Keep some spare time to sail...

    Hi Gavin

Basically I'm feeling my way back into sailing following the stroke that I had in Brest last December. Going well so far but I seem to tire easily. All being well we hope to head south early next week if if we get some light northerlies, aiming at the La Rochelle area, where we may dump the boat for a few weeks and visit our daughter in the Alps - see Shui Jen article in the recent mag. . Ideally We don't want to hang around; we'll just go when things feels right. You could crew a leg for us, but it could be hard to coordinate.

A better bet for your purposes could be to contact Paul and Mo on Ti Gitu as they are I believe hanging around in Brittany for longer than we are. Suggest you drop them an email. We may see  them in Douarnenez next week.

Shame you couldn't make the junket. Still, I bet Italy was a treat.

Ok Brian, no worries. As it turns out I'm suddenly busy with work anyway. Not too confident you'll get the gentle northerlies you're after next week; we had those for the past week but the future forecasts aren't looking that way. I heard good reports of Pornic if you don't manage La Rochelle in a day and need a stopover. Yes, Italy was fabulous, highly recommend www.polvano.com if you want a break (though don't fly via Rome as we did if you value your sanity; possibly the most hair-raising hire car trip I ever made).

Take it easy Brian, slowly does it with the voyaging!

    Cheers

    Gavin

Gavin, thanks for letting us know. It will be a shame not to meet again - I believe that the last time we met we sailed in your boat at a rally in, er, Newhaven, many moons ago. Hope to catch you soon, perhaps ear where you now live. We'll try not to sail on by!

    Hi Brian

Now back from Italy; how long are you staying around in Brittany? Maybe I could drive up one day soon, you're only 2 hrs easy drive from here (LEeGoludic, 56500 Moréac)

No problem, Chris. Ti Gitu arrived this morning and Maddy and I just had a good Italian meal ashore with Paul and Mo. They've kindly invited us to daysail with them tomorrow, which means I don't have to pack my tools, varnish kit and half-serviced outboard away. Hopefully Francois will join us too as he couldn't make it today. Ti GItu has the best interior design we've ever seen. What a boat.

Didn't even get halfway, I'm afraid, as you can see here. After making fairly good time for the first few hours with light following winds, I hit fog and was becalmed for a while in the shipping lanes, and then the wind went round to light south-westerly and i was making very poor progress. My battery had died, and I was going to miss the tidal gate at le Four. Did not fancy the following tide through the race at night with no nav lights, so would have meant 24 hours delay. Weather was forecast to go back to light northeasterlies in the channel by Monday, so it became apparent that I could not make the round trip in the time available even if I left Brest very soon after arriving.

Could not make the north Brittany coast before dark, to get a new battery, so turned back at a point where I could hope to re-cross the shipping lane in daylight. Pottered about 20nm off Plymouth during the night and entered the Sound the following morning. All rather frustrating, but discretion being the better part of valour, I was very sorry to miss our meeting.

Thanks Ash. Heard around lunchtime that Chris Gallienne on China Girl aborted his cross Channel trip around the halfway point. Thunderstorm and a failed battery. Should be back in Plymouth by now. So it's just Ti Gitu and Paradox on Monday. Oh plus Francois of course. Shame for Chris. We ought to have a prize for a good try.

Another update: Paul & Mo on Ti Gitu (see latest excellent JRA mag, well done all) are now planning to sail from Port Launay to Marina du Chateau, Brest, with Francois Gavillon as crew, on Monday a.m.. Chris Gallienne on China Girl is leaving Plymouth 0200 Friday to single-hand to Brest, arriving sometime on Saturday. Maddy and I are on Paradox are in Brest, so the junket could  start on Monday. Weather very windy and, though sunny, cold. Supposed to improve slowly from tomorrow. Anyone in the area please come join in!
