    Hi Terry,

I am happy to offer you some help from my limited knowledge, or if not point you in the right direction.

Has the boat ever sailed -  i see she has a former owner - so can you let me know a little more. Have you sailed with the previous owner?

She is a ketch - are the two masts stepped (raised) or still on deck?

There is a mass of assistance in the JRA website so  go to  HOME then down to JUNK INFORMATION  you will find a great deal of help.

There are excellent articles by Arne and Slieve - if you go to 'Members Area - Documents' but probably the best start for you would be to buy a copy of PJR =Practical Junk Rig which explains all the rigging clearly plus much more;  also read Arne's 'Junk Rig for Beginners shown on the Home page.

Also on the Home Page under 'Get Started' the second bullet point down "Says Youtube or PDF Download presentation for Yacht clubs". This is compiled by David Tyler and you may find it is helpful.

You mention Hoops round the mast - not normally used with a Junk sail - normally the battens pass besides the mast and extend forward a little, they are kept close to the mast by 'batten parrels', a rope or strap attached to the batten ahead  of the mast, round the mast on the opposite side , then attached to the batten again aft of the mast.

I can confidently say that describing it all in words can make it seem far too complicated - whereas in fact it is quite simple - so have a look through the JRA site and i am sure you will find lots of images to explain the info you need.

Can you sail or what experience do you have on boats? What do you eventually hope to do with her?

How about adding a few photos to your profile - add an album of above deck together with some of your sails laid out in the car park or your garden , and some below deck photos will assist us a lot. If unsure once you have taken a few photos give me a shout and i will help you post them. My email is found by clicking on my name then read my profile.

I have just thought that the words we use might not make a lot of sense to you and so if you go to Members Area - on the Home page, select Junk FAQs then Vocabulary it may help you.

Lastly, in early December i will be visiting Spalding and may have a few hours to spare - so if you would like i could pop over to Peterborough and have a quick chat. We could go through the stuff you have, and hopefully help you sort out the best way forward.

    Cheers

    Ash

PS:     I see Terry has now added some photographs of sails and Sunfung to PHOTOGALLERY.

    Ash

hi my name is terry and for 12 years I have been the owner of a Chinese junk I am now ready to fit her out and rig the junk sails the inside is empty and I would like advice on what to put in her cabin for the sails I have a small suit case full of shackles pulleys and fittings the sails are made up with bamboo batens I need to know how to fix the sail to the mast, I have got a pulley at the top of the mast to hoist the sail but do I use hoops to slide up and down the mast or just rope, the sails are made of a nylon and I may replace them with a new set and would like to know what material to use to be correct,  the original Yanmar diesel engine runs well but we just need sail power can you help
