Thanks Annie - I struggle with the French too! I console myself with the fact that it's 1840's French!

I've just slowly and painfully downloaded it.  As you say, gorgeous illustrations, but the text is testing my French!  However, if I download it and read it on my Kobo e-reader, I can at least look up the words in the French-English dictionary that comes with it.  Thanks for all these things you are discovering, Chris.  I envy your intellectual energy!

OK - I uploaded the reduced version to box: Documents->Chris Gallienne->Paris. 3.4 MB it contains the title and introductory pages and the section on China with relevant illustrations. I will upload the full version later.

Perhaps the small PDF could be added to the library as a download for all?

    Hi Chris,

I'd be most interested in a copy.

I wonder if members are aware of this book, published in 1841:

Essai sur le Construction Navale des Peuples Extra-Europeenne by Francois-Edmond Paris.

Pre-dating Worcester by over a century it contains some wonderful illustrations of Chinese vessels (rather better than those in Worcester), such as the Salt Junk shown here.

I have a very large pdf of this book which I obtained last year while writing part 1 of the history. It's not in our library and perhaps should be. I have extracted the section on China as a smaller pdf if anyone is interested (all in French).
