    The original request for help was a letter to the Chairman, so perhaps it is better she replies on behalf of the JRA.  I have exchanged several emails with Colin Byfleet on a personal level, hence my intention to write to him on my own account.

    The EISCA appear to have made a ridiculous about turn, having initially contacted the JRA for assistance with the unfortunate Keying.  They, and we, both look rather ridiculous now, when someone has come up with such a great plan both to restore the ship and to use her, rather than setting her in a slab of concrete.  As a committee member, I would strongly endorse a formal letter stating our disappointment.  Quite apart from the need to restore Keying, a living vessel crossing the oceans would obviously be a much better way to inform people about the potential of ocean-going junks, rather than a static exhibit in a relatively remote part of Great Britain.

    This is disappointing, especially after all the hard work you and others have put in. Apart from the obvious support you have rallied to bring Keying II back to operational condition, the sailing back to Hong Kong would make a tremendous sequel to the voyage of her namesake 170 years ago. I'm sure it could attract lots of media interest and support.

    We cannot know all the grounds upon which this decision was made - although it is easy to believe that the saving of face might be one - the history of Keying II since arriving in the UK does not reflect well upon us as custodians. This decision will look like a very poor one in hindsight if that record is found, after a few years, to have continued.

    This is sad news indeed.  I am most surprised by it.  A few months ago nobody was interested in the plight of Keying II except the JRA.  I am not sure if this a political decision or the trustees genuinely believe that the long term future of Keying II is best served by a museum in Scotland.  Given the past history of her treatment by institutions in the UK  I'll be amazed if she isn't looking for a new home again in a couple of years.

    I will be writing to Colin Byfleet to express my disappointment.

    Just want to keep everyone updated on the destiny of Keying II. We planned to restore her and sail her across Atlantic, Panama, Tahiti, Hawaii, Taiwan, Hong Kong, which will be a historic voyage in the junk sailing culture. I received exciting support from everyone I spoke to including Peter Scandling, junk builders in China and Hong Kong, and American friends offered to escort us across Atlantic. Sadly EISCA informed me that they want to withdraw their offer. I am trying my last effort to convince them to let me sail her on the historic voyage home. John Kwong

    Interesting to note how similar in apparent hull shape and sail plan these three junks are: Keying II, Jose Maria Tey's Rubia and Brian Clifford's Golden Lotus

    Having been out of the loop for a while, I'm just catching up on this.  I have a couple of contacts in Hong Kong who might be interested in saving her.  I'll send out some emails.  Can you let me have the contact details for the chap in Eyemouth?
