Members will be aware that for some considerable time Chris Scanes, a member of the JRA and a professional sailmaker, has made junk rig sails to order. Members will have seen the regular advertisement that Chris paid for in the JRA Magazine for his then business Sails and Canvas Ltd of Topsham. Junk sails were only a small part of that business, but a regular part, typically one or more junk sail orders each month. Members will however probably not be aware that approximately one year ago Chris sold Sails and Canvas Ltd to a local businessman, principally because at 67 he wanted to reduce his personal workload. Chris then worked for Sails and Canvas Ltd as a consultant and hands-on sailmaker and trainer, during which time the business took on a young apprentice sailmaker, Sam Woolner. Chris states that Sam has rapidly become a competent and enthusiastic sailmaker, so much so that he now wishes to set up his own business, which is to be called Exe Sails and Covers. Chris has now decided to leave Sails and Canvas Ltd and to be employed by the new Exe Sails and Covers as consultant and sailmaker. Until the new business is established, which Sam hopes will be in a very few weeks, anyone interested in having a junk sail manufactured, modified or repaired by the new business should contact Chris on his home number : +44 1392 876109 or Email:
