I am a new JRA member and loving reading the Hall of Fame and back issues of the Newsletter. In number 78, there is a review of Kris Larsen’s book Monsoon Dervish and I got interested in reading it.. but I can’t seem to track down where to buy a copy.. Searching online brings me to lots of different sites associated with Kris and his wife and their art, but I can’t seem to find the button that says “take my money and send me a book.”

I may just be dense here. If there is a place to buy the book, could someone share a link to it?

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

New copies of Monsoon Dervish are currently unavailable and may well be indefinitely.  Kris's wife, Natalie, died a few years ago, and the whereabouts of Kris are currently unknown.  He left Rabaul in PNG, eight months ago, and has not been heard of since.  He printed and distributed his own books, rather than selling them through Amazon, etc, and since Nat's unexpected death, he simply closes his online bookshop when he goes sailing.  My copy, with a dust jacket made from Kehaar's old charts, is a priceless collectors item.  I have no idea how many copies he sold, and have never seen one on secondhand book lists.

It appears to be impossible to find a used copy of Monsoon Dervish. But I managed to find a way to read it online. It turns out that someone has translated it into Russian and published it as an ebook, which others have then posted online in plain text.

So I put it through Google Translate, and out came an English translation of a Russian translation of an English text.

It's reasonably readable most of the time, but plain confusing other times, and there has to be a lot that's lost in translation. It makes me wish I had the original book even more than before, but it's something.

For anyone interested, here it is:

    Welcome to the association!

It looks as though it hasn't been in print for some time.  Your best bet is to keep an eye on used book sites (I use Abe Books or Ebay), but you're unlikely to be lucky.

It doesn't help this time, but the JRA does have a library of books that can sometimes be helpful - have a look at https://www.junkrigassociation.org/library - a good selection of titles, some digitised, and some made of dead trees.  Alas, no Monsoon Dervish though.
