He was an amazing man by any standard. I must keep a look out for his books.

Hi Declan. Thanks for your kind words and amusing and inspiring memories of Bill King. Members felt it important to mark his passing, and we're very glad to have 'onboard' someone in Galway who knew him. To your list of his books I'd add 'The Wheeling Stars : A Guide for Lone Sailors'. Boston, London: Faber & Faber.

I must say that I'm pleased to see Commander King's passing marked with affection and respect on this forum. I'm one of those lucky enough to sail within sight of his home at Oranmore Castle, and can proudly count Bill King as a fellow club member at Galway Bay Sailing Club.
You may be happy to know that, up until very recently, Bill walked daily to the local shop; when I last queued behind him in the supermarket, he was explaining to the shop-girl that he was 98 years old - I'm not sure she believed him! Two years ago, he was the guest of honour at GBSC laying-up supper where he kindly signed some books for me and gave a good account of himself on the dancefloor. Just last summer, Bill was out sailing on Galway Bay with some friends of mine.
It goes without saying that Bill King is a constant inspiration to all of us who sail in Galway Bay. He would be a hero even had he never set foot on Galway Blazer. His accounts of submarine warfare in the North Sea and China Sea are mind boggling, not least because the chances of surviving to command his boat through the entire war must have been hopelessly remote. I thoroughly recommend seeking out a copy of Dive and Attack, or Adventure in Depth which recounts the story of his circumnavigation in Galway Blazer II.

Yes, it would be good to see Galway Blazer (also, alas, the late).

Bill King was a truly remarkable man.  Photographs of him make him appear to have been physically frail, but he must have been tough.  The strain of commanding submarines all through the Second World War would have been shocking and his voyages in Galway Blazer were no picnics.  102 is a fine age to reach.  I wonder if he and Blondie are looking down in some surprise as to how many people have been inspired by their achievements to try junk rig for themselves.

Brian, I think that would be great having GB as the boat of the month.

Brian, yes "Deep Water" was about Crowhurst, but they had an interview on the DVD with some the guys still living that participated in the race including Bill King.

Karlis...thanks for the plug.  The boat on the wiki looks like a Tom Colvin design.  I noticed that a few years ago and thought I made a comment on the wiki back then.....maybe they removed it.....
