Arne has drawn my attention to this website
where there are many pages of top quality photos of junks and sampans taken by Karsten Petersen in the 1970's.
Some points that immediately caught my eye:
- Some of the photos clearly show the camber induced by twisting a fanned sail.
- The Hong Kong junks have fanned sails with a short, high-peaked yard, resulting in an almost horizontal leech to the top panel. I understand this "flat top" to be best, aerodynamically, as the tip vortex is shed further aft - anyway, this is what I was aiming for with the "Fantail" sail planform.
- The sails which are obviously newly made are flat. Only when a sail ages does it begin to show some fullness in the panels.
- The cloths are sometimes laid parallel to the yard (which is often in line with the luff), sometimes laid parallel to a line connecting clew and peak.
- All the yulohs are straight, not curved or bent(!)
- In Macao, they seem to have given up on yulohing, and are using two straight yulohs as oars.
