Hi Mark. Your wish (some time ago) is our command. We have some at last. Many thanks to Antoinne Maartens for sending this link to Pete Hill's blog about his trip with Fran from the UK to Brazil in Oryx - lots of pictures. Pete is/was busily rebuilding bits of the boat and making new sails.

Great to see Pete on the water.  Not one, but two junk rigged cats at once!!

The boat looks superb (would it be any other way from Pete?).  The rig very interesting, looks like it still needs some fine tuning to set up well, hours of fun ahead.  What does look suprising, especially when used to seeing heavy displacement yachts, is how small the rig (s) is.

Looking forward to hearing some sailing report.

    Mark

Peter, many thanks for posting that link. It will soon be time to select the Boat of the Month again. I don't think we've ever had a cat. with twin split junk sails before. It would get my vote!

Oryx was launched 2 weeks ago and I have been very busy getting everything together and working. A few problems with the sails which needs some restiching. Hope to be able to go for a sail by the weekend.  I have put some photos of the launch in the photogallery.

Brian if we are going to count work done while under way then I think I will still beat you.:)
Any news on how Oryx is performing?

No you don't, Gary. Our previous boat (Sunbird 32 Matania) came as a bare hull. I'd just about finished her by the time we sold her nearly 30 years later. Mind you we did a lot of the work underway....

I reckon I hold the record for longevity of a build.
I agree though it's going to be a good year for new launches.

Great to hear that Oryx has been launched. I saw her at the Summer rally in June and she was looking good then. Look forward to seeing some photographs. I agree totally with your sentiment Gary about building your first boat. Malliemac has been 10 years in building, although not full time, and she should be launched in a few weeks. It seems 2012 is going to be a good year for new and refurbished boat launches. Robin Blain launched his new boat Gigi at the East Coast rally last weekend.
