What you need to do is to stop the mast heel from moving, both side to side and up and down. Alloy against alloy makes a terrible noise!

I made hard wood plug for the bottom of my mast, with a tapered end. This fits into a tapered socket. I made it loose, so that there was no difficulty in alignment, then poured casting polyurethane into the gap (having put release agent on the plug).

Does the mast (tube) fit in its mast step as it is, or do you install inside the mast step a rigid sole between the tube and the bottom of the mast step?

I find the tube sharp-cutting and i wonder if, when the boat hits the hollow of the waves, from top to bottom, little by little the tube would not sharp-cut the bottom of the mast step? I speak particularly to people who have a tube or a candelabrum for mast and who made their wooden mast step.
