It's no good handing a conservative view to someone caught by an idea. So a comment about the worth of a mast that exists and fits, versus one that is imagined but is a little thinner, would drift away with the breeze like a curl of wood from my plane. Sailing is only one reason for boats. Creation is another one.

Sure, you can get sufficient strength in a smaller diameter, by making the wall thickness greater, but you don't get sufficient stiffness going this way. A junk rig mast that acts like a fishing rod/pole is not at all good to live with.

    Booiinggg!
I was typing my answer to Neil before I saw this. Y'ol spoilsport! :-)

I'm curious about the price of a carbon mast.  When deciding on masts for Sea Elf I never thought about carbon-fiber because I figured they'd be pretty pricey.  I could be wrong.  I bought aluminum flagpoles for Sea Elf.  The fore cost $914 plus shipping.  The foremast is 6" x 33ft.  The SA for the foresail is 240 square feet and bury is 4.5ft.  I don't know if you are on budget but if you are and the flagpole is cheaper, could you live with the 6" dia.  pole down below?

I haven't actually measured my mast, but I'm pretty sure its longer than 33'. If you look at Seablossom's picture, she's 27' LOD plus a 2' bowsprit. The mast sticks about 3' off the stern and at least 7' over the bow, I think. Say probably not less than 38', maybe as much as 40.
Then there's been all this fussing about noisy and cold aluminum masts.
Of course I *am* on a budget, but there is also "Buy the best and cry once."
To tell the truth I haven't priced the carbon either. I have this vague recollection that I thought I found one for about $1500 US, but I can't find it again and it might have been a dream. If that's a realistic number, though, I think I'd pay the half again over aluminum if I really could save another 2" diameter, still another unknown at this time.

    THIS WON'T HAPPEN THIS YEAR!

I'm considering replacing my massive wooden mast with carbon (again), this time for the express purpose of buying some space below and more ease in unstepping / stepping.

I know that a larger diameter tube is stronger and more rigid, all things being equal, than a smaller diameter tube. All things, however, are never equal.

The existing mast is about the size of a desert plate. The main cabin in the Nor'Sea 27 is very compact. If I could free up half that mast diameter it would make a vast improvement. Say reduce the 8 to 9" diameter to a 4" diameter.

Here's the punch line: I'm looking at a 4 ton boat, probably 250 sq ft or so sail. The existing mast is maybe 30' or so LAP, 6'+ bury. So am I way off base, or is this doable?
