A lugsail in a dinghy is one thing (although having sailed an 8ft dinghy with a junk sail, I now reckon I'd never have anything else!): a full-sized lugsail is a very different animal.  But most of all, I wouldn't dream of having a sail that has to be lowered and man-handled in order to put a reef in when I could have one that reefs 'automatically' like a junk sail.  But I am an extraordinarily lazy sailor!

thanks for the reply, performance, as far as racing goes is the last of my concerns, coastal pottering about is my intention, so flat cut and simple would be the way to go :)

I'd say that it's precisely because  coastal pottering is your intention that you want a cambered sail. Coastal sailing normally involves a lot of windward work. It's in offshore sailing that careful planning can reduce windward work to the minimum but for coastal work, you have to work with what you get. So unless you are prepared to spend a lot of time waiting, coastal is where you need windward ability.

hello annie, thanks for the reply, i have a wooden folkboat at glasson dock which i am converting to a junk rig, long keel, heavier and a huge unbalanced rudder, a new mast has already been made, and as the mast on the bolero is damaged, i was going to swap the old alloy mast off the folkboat and place it in the bolero.

just out of curiosity, why would you hesitate at a standing lug sail ?, i was thinking of about 250sq ft, i also have a 15ft wooden seafly dinghy ( very similair to a wayfarer ) and am putting a lugsail on her, although the sail area will only be about 80 sq ft with a small mizzen.

    thanks in advance

There have been some very successful fin keel junk rig conversions.  One outstanding example is Marie G, in Norway, a blisteringly fast junk-rigged racing yacht.  I'd rig your boat with one of Arne Kverneland's cambered sails to optimise your performance potential.
