Question: How is the helm balance with your present schooner rig?

Wow, thank you Arne for your speedy work!

In answer to your question; yes, plenty of weather helm with wind on the beam. I reef the main very early and often have to take a couple of reefs in it to stop the boat being overpowered with excessive weather helm. I should perhaps add that I intend to change the foresail sheeting system this winter, to reduce twist and therefore spillage in that.

In an ideal world, I'd like the mast a bit aft of where you have it...

That wasn’t an easy one, Tony.
This quick sketch  (draft 1) shows what I mean. To move the CE as far aft as the CE of the schooner rig sits, I need to give the sloop rig only 15% mast balance. It is not extreme, but not ideal either.
On a rig over 40sqm, I would rather have 21-26% balance to reduce sheet force and steering imbalance downwind.

This is from Benford's website, Arne, and is exactly Tapatya's profile. Is it enough?

To be clear here, I'm just toying with ideas, which, if anything at all, would be a project for the distant future...

But, having recently met Wolfgang and Ursula on the junk sloop Prüveda, my thoughts have turned once again to the possibility of converting Tapatya (31.8ft Benford dory) to a junk sloop rig, with tabernacle.

I have no problem imagining the engineering of the tabernacle, and would envisage an aluminium/wood composite mast in the style suggested by Arne in his writings. I imagine its position would be just aft of the no.3 station bulkhead (which divides the saloon and forepeak).

Wolfgang and Ursula have just had a new and smaller, but cambered, sail made for Prüveda (Tuchwerkstatt) and are very happy with it. They report that Prüveda sails better with the new sail, which has a sail area of 40m2.

As Prüveda and Tapatya are vey similar in size and displacement, I'd imagine a single sail of about that size (which would be a little less than the total sail area of the two sails that she currently has).

I wonder if any of the sail designers here have drawn a single junk sailed rig for a Benford dory, and what your thoughts are on the idea. As I said, this is very unlikely to happen in the near future :)
