It's not aimed to be KISS Arne, more a Christmas quiz or thought provoker. Once you get a concept then apply KISS.

However, I'm not being 100% honest in the question as I plan to suggest an alternative idea next week, but am interested to see if anyone will come up with it in the meantime.

    Cheers, Slieve.

I thought of this too but was too shy to suggest it as a novice! A strong low angle yard junk rig and a standard gaff tops'l arrangement. It could look stunning, lots of scope for nice colours and graphics. Then I thought if you're not KISS you might as well get a smart looking gaff rig instead, but then fooling around with the tops'l would only be done in light airs and calm when there's not much else to do so why not?

Very much what I've been thinking about for some years; I am thinking of a telescoping mast with soft wing sail. Hoist the top three panels on the outer tube and then hoist that tube for unreefing the lower panels. I even built a very rough test part to see if comes down well enough. Still think it can be done.(i'm very optimistic..)

    Happy Christmas

..er, what happened to your KISS principles, Slieve?
Maybe you should try it on your RC-model first...

    Cheers and Merry Christmas

In the Christmas holidays many play games and do puzzles as a balance to eating too much and even drinking too much cheer. So here's a little thought provoking idea to start a discussion.

There has been much talk of the necessary rig area and mast height required to have a rig which will satisfy both light airs and storm conditions. With the junk rig we want the simple life, but why not accept a little extra work when conditions are benign.

Why not build a rig and mast to suit moderate to storm conditions, and then hoist a top-mast extension with loosely connected extra yard and light weather top panel?

It's not as mad as you think. Think of the normal procedure with a gaff rig. You have a nice snug rig, but when conditions are light the top sail is hoisted, often on a top mast and sometimes with a club boom to extend the gaff.

    It's just a thought.

    Merry Christmas everyone.

    Cheers, Slieve.
