Georg, I'm right handed, so I'd usually steer with that hand. The outboard was 'inboard', in a well. The throttle control protruded into the cockpit slightly, so I'd get the boat on course, switch to steering with my left hand, turn sideways and adjust the throttle, take a look at how things were going and so on until the engine was running how I wanted. Then back to steering with my right hand. I suppose a remote could have helped, but it's something else to go wrong, thiough I don't know how reliable they are.

    thank you! :-))
actually – the decision came to me because i had the opportunity to get it very cheap… *gg*
i was just wondering how one can steer the boat and at the same time accelerate the engine…

Hey Georg you make quicker decisions than I do :-) We never had a remote control cable. I doubt we'd have used one if we'd had one, as the engine is only arms length way when you're at the helm.

I believe we had a longshaft - long time ago. That link that I just sent re the infill board includes a longleg outboard. There are other K20s for sale on kyoa - you could see what engines etc they have. Also on www.apolloduck.com - srcoll down to the bottom of the page.

    thank you, brian.
do you recommend a short, standard or long shaft?

and colin, so  you wouldn't recommend the honda inboard?

what if i can get a volvo penta or an old johnson?

Hers does. You'd better measure the compartment and compare the dimensions with the engines that interest you.

Hi Georg. My daughter says her Kingfisher came with a TOHATSU 6 hp PETROL which is ideal. That probably means its innards are Mariner - most of these small engines have the same guts, I'm told.

Funnily enough I am facing exactly the same problem. I had a 5hp Honda last season, but it choked itself on fumes accumulating in the outboard well. I have decided to change it, partly because it is a long shaft and I'm now told that a standard shaft would be better. It seems that many people have had to run a vent tube overboard from the secondary exhaust port on the Honda's drive leg to cure the choking problem. I am thinking about a 5hp Johnson, because it has the same guts as a Mariner, but is a touch cheaper, and has a gearshift lever on the front of the engine not on the side, which should be far easier to operate with the engine in the Kingfisher's well. Whether or not a tube from the drive leg exhaust port will be needed I don't know.
