After my recent mishap with a broken yard and bent battens, I am pondering how to remove battens from the sail of a single masted junk at sea. Arion has batten pockets and this means that, whether you withdraw them from the luff or leach, most of the batten ends up in the sea by the time you have extracted it as my luff in particular and the leech are very close to the ends of the ship. I think that before I make an ocean passage on Arion I will fit eyelets to the sail and lash the battens to the sail without batten pockets. That way I can cut the lashings and remove the bent or broken batten on the cabin top and replace it in the same way. Obviously a two masted junk has an advantage here, as you can remove the aft sail's battens through the luff and the foresail's battens through the leech with plenty of deck to work on.
