Bow wells on junks for pitch damping

I ran across this quote on the Harry Proa group describing an interesting feature of some Chinese junks.   I'd love to see photos and hear more about this....  a rather madly brilliant feature, though it would have to be controllable so that it wouldn't prevent the bow from rising when it needed to.  The rate of fill and drain would require some tuning.  It sort of reminds me of some of the devices they use to dampen roll on monohulls at anchor, where flaps allow them to descend easily, but resist ascent.

        Anybody heard of this before?

I remember reading about a feature of Chinese Junks, that they had bow wells with an adjustable scupper that would be configured to fill when submerged and drain completely when pitched up, such that the bow was buoyant when descending and weighted when ascending.
